This is a comprehensive NASA website that provides extensive factual information for teachers and students about the celestial objects making up the solar system. The website provides a general introduction to the solar system and a network of links to information about each of the major components: the Sun, each of the planets and all of their moons, dwarf planets, comets, the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. A wealth of up-to-date textual, visual and tabulated information is provided. There are also links to video and audio clips as well as animations.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a useful website supporting the Earth and space sciences sub-strand of the science curriculum for year 5, in particular the content description relating to understanding that Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the Sun).
  • The amount and depth of information provided, along with the large number of linked web pages and the variety of resources, is likely to be somewhat overwhelming for many students in this year level. Teachers will find the website to be a very useful reference site, but students may require guidance on how to use the website to locate specific information otherwise they may become distracted by the myriad of linked web pages and downloads.
  • The resource has the potential to contribute to students attaining that element of the year 5 achievement standard that involves describing key features of our solar system, providing the key features are identified beforehand.
